Goodwood Festival of Speed

July 30, 2011 - July 3, 2011

The Goodwood Festival of Speed has become a mainstay of the motor sport and social calendars, since its inception in 1993. The brainchild of the current Earl of March, the event is a paean to all things automotive, and particularly those that can attain the highest speeds, hence the rather appropriate title.

There are many attractions over the three days, including displays of the most elegant thoroughbred sports and super cars of past and present on the lawns in front of Goodwood House, and of course the world-renowned hillclimb. This takes place over a 2.5km distance, and sees everything from Formula One powerhouses, through performance bikes and vintage beauties attempting to record the fastest possible time.

Visitors are also given the chance to see the cream of today's professional drivers and riders take on the legends of yesteryear, and in recent times, the names have included Damon Hill, Jensen Button, Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Carl Fogarty, Lewis Hamilton, Jochen Mass and Mario Andretti. Thankfully though, things are pretty good-natured, which ties in well with the family-friendly atmosphere of the weekend.

If you have a passing interest in raw horsepower and the timeless icons of four (and two!) wheeled style, then the Festival of Speed 2009 could be well worth attending!
